Mahalo and Aloha

Headmaster Dr. Val Iwashita, at the end-of-school year faculty meeting, recognized several educators who are retiring or leaving ‘Iolani to pursue new challenges.

In addition to the retirees (Dean of Lower School Fred Okumura ’65, science teacher Laurie White and English teacher Jane Romjue), he thanked English teacher Jinny Hall for ten years of service, history teacher Kim Keliiholokai ’93 for five years of service, and Mandarin teacher Hsaio-wei Chan for three years of service.

He also presented tokens of appreciation to teachers for unique strengths they each bring to ‘Iolani. The teachers received gifts that reflected their personalities and areas of expertise.


Second grade teacher Cynthia Chung, Rev. Diane Martinson-Koyama, sixth grade teacher Deborah Wakahiro, Spanish teacher Lisa Bailey, English teacher Michael LaGory, (Headmaster Val Iwashita) and computer support specialist Ricky Okazaki were recognized at the final school-wide faculty and staff meeting of the year.

Congratulations to math teacher Kristi Sakaguchi on the birth of her son, Kolby Torao Sakaguchi, on January 7, 2010.

Warm wishes history teacher Melanie Soares on her marriage to Tim Pfingsten on November 14 2009.

Director of College Counseling Todd Fleming and wife Katie ’94 welcomed their second son, Robert Kenneth, into the world on April 10, 2010.

Warm wishes to warehouse manager Evan Roberts ’97 on his marriage to Keala Chang on March 20, 2010.


Interim assistant dean of the Lower School Catherine Fuller ’84 and Lower School religion teacher Linda Miyata dance to He‘eia in the annual May Day Program.


Lei Fortuno, Institutional Advancement information coordinator, joined teachers and other staff in a May Day performance.
